In the online literary space we frequently lament on the stressors and challenges of being a black woman. All the frustration of having to work twice as hard in our corporate terrains, and yadda, yadda, yadda. But the biggest issue we deal with is our hair in the summer. Vain? Maybe. Shallow? Slightly. But a woman’s mane is supposed to be her crowning glory. No matter how hard we fight against impressionism and manipulation, we’ll never be a part of that carefree clique. There is a necessary hair care regimen for even the teeny, weeniest of Afros. Leave that to the other folks who aren’t burdened by kinks, curls, and coils zigzagging about in the same head of hair. I feel for my sisters who have to pre-schedule their quarterly relaxer appointments against the time they decide to go hard in the gym.
I can’t think of a single thing that is more dreadful, yet anticipatory as a vacation. That’s five or more days separated from your precious at-home hair boudoir. Time away from the days you allot to detangling, shampooing, conditioning, deep conditioning, moisturizing and styling because on vacation — ain’t nobody got time for that. My tresses aren’t perfect, but they won’t stand in the way of my enjoyment. For fun, I present you the challenges of maintaining vacation hair by style.
